In the end of my first year at the Vakschool Schoonhoven the school held an intrascholastic competition for all first-year students. The product had to be a pillbox. Restrictions were set only on the size and general shape of the outlines of the box, as for the rest we had total and utter freedom when it came to designing it.
Considering this the celebratory last big piece of our first year I did wish for my pill box to carry some meaning, if only visible to me. Due to my illness I’m no stranger to the everyday object that is a pill box. I therefore wanted to embrace it as such, thematically.
What you see here is a lotus flower which is known to grow out of mud, which to me resembles my bipolar disorder where the magical may only exist with the terrible. No mud, no nutrients, no life.
The box is made of sterling silver, partially blackened with sulfur, and a black pearl on top. The engraving on the bottom of the pill box “Sola Dosis Facit Venenum“ (engl. The dose makes the poison) refers to a quote by Paracelsus, a swiss physician, alchemist and astrologer of the German Renaissance who said:
Alle Dinge sind Gift, und nichts ist ohne Gift, allein die Dosis macht dass ein Ding kein Gift ist.
All things are poison, and nothing is without poison, the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.
